Success begins at home.
Home. It's many things to many people. But, to everyone, it’s the basis for building a life, raising children and gaining a financial foothold. Throughout our region, United Way is working to ensure that more people have the resources they need to find safe, stable and affordable homes. We do this by creating a spectrum of support that addresses the underlying causes of the obstacles families face. From emergency shelters to financial education to creating more affordable housing, we’re uniting our region to create holistic, community-based solutions. Because we all win when everyone has a place to call home.
Our Goal: Ensure all children and families will have access to safe, affordable and appropriate housing.
Our Challenge: The Corporation for Enterprise Development 2007-2008 Assets and Opportunity Scorecard ranked Massachusetts 45th in homeownership rate and 48th in home affordability. Massachusetts was also ranked the third least affordable rental market by the National Low Income Housing Coalition in 2006.
Our Approach: United Way invests in programs that provide families with access to quality financial education and tools to build assets and that increase families' access to safe, affordable and appropriate housing. United Way is also convening stakeholders, developing public will, and investing to end homelessness through a "housing first" approach.
Our Strategy
- Increase the number of affordable housing units
- Increase the number of people people served by financial skills training
- Increase the number of families who have retained or obtained affordable housing with help from agencies operating under a Housing First philosophy
