United Way calls for greater investment in “human capital”
“Nationally, United Way is challenging officials to match the billions that will be spent rebuilding the Gulf Coast region’s physical infrastructure with similar investments in human capital,” Little said. “Imagine the social progress that we would see in our community if we created the same movement and dedicated even greater resources to ensure social and economic opportunity is accessible to all.”
For more than 70 years, United Way of Massachusetts Bay has played a critical role in the local community by pooling resources to maximize support for a range of social issues. UWMB is working to improve the future of the children of Greater Boston – by both strengthening the financial security of parents today and ensuring that kids are getting the nurturing support and educational opportunities that will prepare them for adulthood.
“The annual United Way campaign is one of the greatest opportunities for individuals to join together in a concerted effort to improve social conditions in the communities where we live and work,” said Cleve Killingsworth, President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and 2005 Chair of United Way of Massachusetts Bay’s fund raising drive.
On Tuesday, September 20, United Way of Massachusetts Bay held its Executive Leadership Breakfast with top corporate leaders, the first of a series of events geared toward securing greater resources to ensure social and economic opportunities are accessible to all children and families. Keynoting the event was Jonathan Kraft, President and COO of The Kraft Group and Vice-Chairman of the New England Patriots. He joined his brother, Josh Kraft, who spoke about United Way’s impact on Chelsea youth from his perspective as executive director of the Jordan Boys and Girls Club. Also speaking at the event were Robert Smyth, Chairman, President and CEO, Citizens Bank of Massachusetts and Isidra Quinones, teen director at the Jordan Boys and Girls Club
Last year, over $591,000 was raised through this event, which this year was sponsored by Citizens Bank of Massachusetts and Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
